Tucked above Melbourne Place and reached only by a discreet laneway ascent, Santana Bar transforms a once unused rooftop into a moody, Latin-inspired retreat designed for Melbourne’s cooler months

We aimed to craft a rooftop bar that embraces darkness, warmth and intimacy - a deliberate counterpoint to the city’s typical summer-centric rooftop culture

The design centres on atmosphere: neon-red lighting washes the space in a hazy glow, creating a sensual, cinematic environment that comes alive after dusk

Thick candle flames, deep timber tones and curated pockets of shadow build a layered visual rhythm, while weather-friendly detailing ensures the rooftop remains comfortable year-round.

Heaters, sheltered zones and material selections tailored for Melbourne’s winter climate allow guests to settle in with ease, even on crisp nights

The planning supports this ritual-driven experience: intimate seating clusters, and a layout that encourages slow, lingering engagement with the bar’s curated menus. The rooftop’s open edges frame moody views of the CBD

Santana Bar is a study in atmosphere: a space where lighting, materiality and sensory cues converge to create a distinctive Melbourne experience. It’s a rooftop designed not for summer, but for the city’s cooler, darker seasons, inviting guests into a world of warmth, smoke and spirited storytelling.
